Frequently Asked Questions
What should I know about the University of Michigan Synchronized Skating Team?
Synchronized Skating is a Club Varsity sport at U of M, making it the first women’s sport and one of only three sports at U of M to receive this designation. The University of Michigan Synchronized Skating Team (UMSST) competes at the Collegiate level at USFSA sanctioned competitions. Each year UMSST rosters 16 to 20 skaters and offers additional skaters trainee spots.
Can I do well in school and still skate?
At Michigan, our skaters have the opportunity to obtain a world-class education while representing a Big Ten school in competitions all over the country. Members of the synchro team take their education seriously. At times, the team has had the highest average cumulative GPA out of all the Club Varsity sports, while team members participate in a wide variety of challenging degree programs.
What is the time commitment?
Skaters on UMSST have three practices a week for approximately two hours per session, often with off-ice training beforehand. There are also two optional freestyle sessions included in the monthly dues for the skaters to work on any skills they wish to perfect. UMSST competes in about five competitions per year, skates in an intermission at a U of M Hockey game, and participates in various ice shows.
What level are most skaters on the team?
In accordance with USFSA guidelines, we welcome all skaters who have juvenile moves or higher to tryout for the team. Currently, the majority of our skaters have Junior Moves or higher. UMSST consists of a wide variety of skaters, including synchro skaters from elite synchro teams, and high level freestyle and pairs skaters from across the country.
Can skaters be involved in activities off the ice?
About half of the team is involved in Greek Life and every skater participates in something else on campus besides skating. As a team we fundraise for various philanthropic prganizations such as Relay For Life, and the profits from our ice shows are donated to charity. There are a number of social events throughout the year including team movie outings, banquets, a formal dance, and an optional date party. The great thing about UMSST is that the team is still competitive at a National level, while allowing skaters to make life- long friendships, have fun skating, and truly enjoy their college experience.
